Forest Sector Terminology Work Project has compiled and published its fourth glossary.
The subject field of forest soils of the Finnish-Russian Forest Dictionary has been revised and supplemented with the missing concepts. The concepts related to the core vocabulary of geology and not having a recognizable forest dependency relationship have been removed from the glossary.
The glossary is divided into the following parts:
- Structure of bedrock and overburden
- Structure of soil
- Rock types
- Soil types
- Peat types
- Mineral soil types
- Poorly sorted soils
- Moraine formations
- Soil separates according to the construction technology (RT-) specification
- Soil separates according to the ISO 14688-1 standard
- Soil types
- Podzol types and structure
- Soil formation processes
- Soil biota
- Nitrogen cycle processes
- Soil thermal conditions
- Concepts related to ground frost
- Sedimentation and sorted deposits
- Disciplines that study soil and the concepts related to them
- Independent concepts
Concerning soil moisture conditions, the Glossary of Forest Hydrology and Forest Drainage has been previously published in this series.
The compilation of the Glossary of Forest Soil Terms was based mainly on forestry principles and the glossary does not include e.g., concepts related to soil geology, carbon cycle, peat production or soil treatment and processing. These concepts as well as those suggested as additions during the public consultation round, will be discussed within the subsequent subject fields of the project or in other follow-up projects.
