Forest Structure and Development Glossary of Terms

Forest Sector Terminology Work Project has compiled and published its third glossary.

The starting point of the terminology work has been the subject field of forest structure and development of the Finnish-Russian Forest Dictionary whose definitions have been revised. The subject field has also been supplemented with the concepts related to continuous cover silviculture and natural forest development which reflect the diversification of silviculture. The definitions of the subject field have also been harmonized with the definitions of the national forest inventory. The glossary is divided into the following parts:

  • Forest stand structure
  • Tree stand structure
  • Tree layers
  • Silvicultural methods
  • Forest stands according to the way they are born
  • Even-aged forest stands according to the number of tree stories
  • Structural variation of tree stands
  • Development classes
  • Forests according to tree species groups and tree species
  • Forest stands according to tree species groups and tree species
  • Forest stand dynamics
  • Natural disturbance dynamics and natural forest development
  • Independent concepts

The concepts related to forest nature diversity and forest ecology have been left outside the published glossary. These concepts as well as those suggested as additions during the public consultation round, will be discussed within the subsequent subject fields of the project or in other follow-up projects.
